Hirajima Natsumi, Yonezawa Rumi leave AKB48 over photo scandal

AKB48’s official website announced on Saturday that members Hirajima Natsumi (19) and Yonezawa Rumi (20) have resigned from the group. Although the official announcement did not touch on the reason for their sudden departure, it was clearly caused by the leak of photos of the two with their boyfriends.

DOPING PANDA to disband in April

Rock band DOPING PANDA announced that they will break up after a concert at Tokyo Dome City Hall on April 19th. The band first formed 15 years ago in 1997, and they have had their current 3-member lineup since 12 years ago. They finally made their major label debut in 2005.

Yamamoto Yusuke takes on first villain role in “Sadako 3D”

Actor Yamamoto Yusuke has been added to the cast of the “Sadako 3D” movie. This will be his first time in a villain role, as he plays a mysterious young man plotting to bring about the return of Sadako from the previous “Ring” films.

AKB48 wins 10 awards at 26th Japan Gold Disc Awards

The 26th Japan Gold Disc Awards were presented in Roppongi on Friday. The awards, which were established in 1987, are based on actual CD and DVD sales, so it comes as no surprise that the Artist of the Year was idol group AKB48. They ended up receiving a total of 10 awards, tying for the all-time record that Arashi set two years ago.

Ninomiya Kazunari to star in movie adaptation of Higashino Keigo’s “Platina Data”

Higashino Keigo’s bestselling mystery novel “Platina Data” is getting a movie adaptation, starring Arashi’s Ninomiya Kazunari (28). Otomo Keishi (“Ryomaden,” “Hagetaka,” “Rurouni Kenshin”) will direct, and actor Toyokawa Etsushi (49) will play a supporting role.

JUJU to perform on “MTV Unplugged” in New York

This spring, singer JUJU will perform on the show “MTV Unplugged” in the U.S., it has been learned. Although many Japanese artists have performed on MTV Japan’s version of “Unplugged,” JUJU will be only the second Japanese artist to appear on the U.S. show.

Eiren: Box office revenue dropped 18% in 2011

The Motion Picture Producers Association of Japan (also known as Eiren) released its annual report on the movie industry on Thursday. Box office revenue in 2011 fell nearly 18% from the previous year, due to various factors, particularly the devastating Tohoku earthquake and tsunami.
