Shinichi Chiaki is the son of a famous pianist. He dreams of becoming a conductor like his idol, Sebastiano Viera, and eventually conducting great orchestras all over the world. Unfortunately, his fear of flying keeps him in Japan, while his classmates leave to study abroad.

His frustration leads to him being rejected by one of the top piano teachers at his academy, and Shinichi struggles to keep his dreams alive. One day, he encounters Megumi Noda (known as Nodame), an oddball girl with few skills but one - her ability to passionately play the piano in a cantabile style. From her, Shinichi learns a lot about himself and his music, and he finds the motivation he needs to continue his path towards becoming a conductor.
