Yakatabune
A yakatabune (literally "roofed boat" or "houseboat") is a type of passenger boat with an enclosed space covered by a roof. A typical yakatabune may be about 20 meters in length and carry between 20 and 100 people. Primarily used as a form of entertainment, yakatabune are also sometimes referred to as "pleasure boats."

This type of boat was first used in the Heian period, available only to the aristocracy. The boats were especially popular for events such as hanami (cherry blossom viewing), tsukimi (moon viewing), and hanabi (fireworks) displays. In the current era, yakatabune are also popular locations for parties throughout the year. Modern yakatabune generally offer full Japanese dinners (served Japanese style on low tables on a tatami floor) and open bars, along with other entertainment such as karaoke and occasionally geisha.

Although Tokyo's Sumida River is perhaps the most well-known locations for yakatabune, with boats passing by Odaiba and underneath the Rainbow Bridge, yakatabune also operate on rivers in other major cities, such as Kyoto, Osaka, Nagoya, and Fukuoka.
