Akanishi Jin’s solo debut single “Eternal” was released last week, and it has so far sold more than 217,000 copies to occupy the #1 spot on the weekly rankings. He is actually the first male solo artist to break 200,000 in first-week sales since Yusuke’s “Himawari” in March 2009.
AKB48’s “Sakura no Ki ni Narou” dropped to #6 in its third week, but it also reached the milestone of 1 million copies sold. Now at 1.022 million copies, “Sakura no Ki ni Narou” has surpassed “Beginner” (1.020 million) to become their best selling single to date. AKB48 is also the first artist since Kuwata Keisuke in 2001 to release two million sellers less than a year apart.
Reaching 1 million in only 3 weeks has outdone “Beginner,” which took 13 weeks to hit a million. In fact, 3 weeks is the fastest that any female group has ever sold 1 million copies of a single. Before this, the fastest was 4 weeks, previously recorded by SPEED’s “White Love,” “my graduation,” and “ALL MY TRUE LOVE,” as well as Morning Musume’s “Koi no Dance Site.”
