Akira Kurosawa's acclaimed 1952 film "Ikiru" is being adapted into a television drama special on TV Asahi. Kabuki actor Koshiro Matsumoto IX will play the lead part.
Like the movie, the drama will tell the story of a section chief in an overly bureaucratic city hall. He finds out that he has stomach cancer, and does not have long to live. Trying to cope with his impending death, he eventually finds meaning in his life by working to create a children's park.
The drama will be broadcast this fall. Filming has already started, and is expected to finish later this month.
