NTV announced that a special episode of the drama series Kuitan will air at 9:00pm on September 30, which happens to be the birthday of lead actor Noriyuki Higashiyama. The special will continue the story from the original series, with the gluttonous detective working on a case in Hong Kong. The episode will appropriately be titled, "Kuitan Special in Hong Kong." In addition, Kuitan's character will undergo some changes - the trademark gold chopsticks will be replaced by ivory ones, and his white coat will be replaced by Chinese attire. Several cast members will return, including Go Morita and Kotomi Kyono.

The original series, which aired during the 2006 winter season, achieved an average rating of 17.4%. The network says there has also been demand for a second series, but no plans have been confirmed yet.
