The 136th Akutagawa Prize was awarded to 23-year-old Nanae Aoyama for her novel, "Hitori Biyori." The novel is described as "depicting the flow of life."

Aoyama is the seventh-youngest author to receive the prestigious award, which is sponsored by the Society for the Promotion of Japanese Literature.

The Society also sponsors the Naoki Prize, which is generally awarded at the same time as the Akutagawa Prize. This time, however, the judges decided that no work was deserving of the award.
