Actress Lena Tanaka (29) has been chosen to star in an NHK miniseries this summer, tentatively titled "Haken no Oscar ~ Shoujo Manga ni Ai wo Komete."
The drama is based on Naoko Matsuda's comic "Shoujo Manga," which ran in Shueisha's Chorus magazine in 2007. Naturally, the story uses shoujo manga as its motif, referencing well-known works like "Glass Mask" and "Rose of Versailles."
The drama is based on the first story of "Shoujo Manga." Tanaka plays Katsuko, a single temp worker who loves shoujo manga. In particular, every day she imagines herself within the world of "Rose of Versailles." When the Kansai-ben-speaking junior president at her company (played by Yoshimi Tokui of comedy duo Tutorial) begins looking to take some unreasonable cost-cutting measures, she hears the voice of Lady Oscar, inspiring her to fight on behalf of the company's employees.
The rest of the supporting cast include Anne Suzuki, Sei Hiraizumi, Tsunehiko Kamijo, and Hikaru Asami. Arisa Kaneko, who wrote the screenplay for the "Densha Otoko" movie, is in charge of the script. NHK has scheduled the six-episode series for its Friday 10:00pm time slot, starting on August 28.
