The 33rd Montreal World Film Festival concluded on Monday. The festival awards have been announced, and this year, Japan's Kichitaro Negishi picked up the prize for Best Director.
Negishi was entered into the competition category with "Viyon no Tsuma" ("Villon's Wife"), adapted from the Osamu Dazai novel of the same name. The movie stars Takako Matsu and Tadanobu Asano.
The last Japanese person to win Best Director at Montreal was the late Jun Ichikawa, who earned the award in 1997 for "Tokyo Lullaby." Last year, Yojiro Takita's "Okuribito" won the festival's top honor, the Grand prix des Americas.
"Viyon no Tsuma" opens in Japan on October 10.
