Isao Takahata honored for lifetime achievement at Locarno

Animation director Isao Takahata (73) received the Leopard of Honour on Thursday night at the currently running Locarno International Film Festival. The award is given every year in recognition of lifetime achievement in filmmaking.

Takahata was handed the award by
French animation director Michel Ocelot (“Azur et Asmar,” “Kirikou and the Sorceress”). Takahata is presenting three of his past films at the festival, and he will also participate in a public talk event with Ocelot.

Takahata is one of the founders and key figures of Studio Ghibli. In addition to directing works such as “Grave of the Fireflies” and “Pom Poko,” he has worked with Hayao Miyazaki on many film and television projects.
