The 63rd Venice Film Festival opens next week, running from August 30th to September 9th. The lineup has been public for a while, and it includes several Japanese films. In competition are Satoshi Kon’s Paprika and Katsuhiro Otomo’s Mushishi. Out of competition are Goro Miyazaki’s Tales from Earthsea and Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s Retribution (Sakebi). A third section, which highlights new trends in cinema, includes Shinji Aoyama’s Koorogi and Mamoru Oshii’s Tachiguishi Retsuden.
