Kei Tani dies at 78

Comedian and actor Kei Tani passed away on Saturday morning due to a cerebral contusion. He was 78. Tani, whose real name was Yasuo Watabe, was also known for being the trombonist of the jazz band Hajime Hana and the Crazy Cats.

On the night of September 10, Tani fell down the staircase of his home and hit his head. He was taken to a hospital, but the contusion caused by the accident ultimately resulted in his death at a little past 5:00am on September 11.

Tani started out his career as a trombone player shortly after the end of World War II. Before joining the Crazy Cats in 1956, he was also briefly involved with bands such as Hara Nobuo to Sharps and Flats and Frankie Sakai to City Slickers. As an actor, Tani got his first starring role in the 1964 film “Zuuzuushii Yatsu.”
