“Male version of NMB48″ to launch in Osaka’s Minami area

Idol group NMB48 is already on the rise, but Osaka’s Minami area is about to get a second one, this time composed of boys. In order to attract more young women to the area, a major production agency is planning to recruit young men for an unnamed idol group that will launch this year. The unit will have a theater built in the head store of the Kintetsu Department Store chain, located in Abeno, Osaka.

Local male idol groups are a rarity for that area, so hopes are high that the new project will be a success. Recruiting will start around the end of this month. Applicants are required to be less than 20 years old and live close enough to Osaka to be able to commute. The final selection will take place in mid-March, and the chosen members will undergo singing and dancing lessons after that.

The group plans to debut in June. After that, they will have scheduled performances at their theater, about once per month. The theater will have an estimated capacity of 400 people.

The neighborhood around Abeno is already aiming to become a trendy spot for youngsters. This April, fashion store Shibuya 109 will open a branch in Abeno, its first in the entire Kansai area.
