Masato Sakai stars in “Nichirin no Isan”

The Jiro Asada novel “Nichirin no Isan” is being turned into a feature film, starring Masato Sakai (36). Kiyoshi Sasabe is directing the movie, which is scheduled to open in theaters next year.

Sakai plays the part of Major Mashiba, an intelligence officer with Japan’s Imperial Guard at the time of World War II. Along with two other officers (Shido Nakamura, Seiji Fukushi), he carries out a secret mission to hide a vast collection of treasures worth hundreds of trillions of yen, intended to help rebuild the country after the war.

The original book was published in 1993, and it has so far sold half a million copies. Asada, who won the Naoki Prize in 1997, has had several works adapted into films, including “Metro ni Notte” and “Poppoya.”

Other cast members include Yusuke Santamaria and Kaoru Yachigusa. Filming begins on April 24.
