Matsumoto’s “Symbol” screening at Toronto, Pusan

On Thursday, comedian Hitoshi Matsumoto (45) attended a preview screening of his second film as a director, “Symbol” (“Shinboru”). He took the stage wearing polka-dot pajamas and an okappa-style wig, the same unusual look that his character has in the movie.

Matsumoto revealed that “Symbol” will be playing at both the Toronto International Film Festival (September 10-19) and the Pusan International Film Festival (October 8-16). His first movie, “Dainipponjin,” was also screened at those festivals in 2007.

Japanese audiences will get to see “Symbol” in theaters starting September 12. The movie is a bizarre story of a man trapped in a white room, desperately trying to escape using the objects that are strangely materializing from the walls.

During the preview event, Matsumoto also mentioned that his wife, ex-talento Rin Ihara (26), is due to give birth to their first child in October. The couple got married this past May.
