Mihoko Abukawa proposes on television

Comedienne Mihoko Abukawa (35), one half of the duo Hokuyo, is now engaged. She publicly proposed to her boyfriend of two years, Shuichiro Masuya (37), on a special episode of “Haneru no Tobira” that aired on Wednesday night.

During the show, Abukawa had to last three rounds in the boxing ring against American boxer Stephanie Dobbs, who is currently 5th in the WBC female light flyweight rankings. The match was a project conceived by her fellow comedians to measure how serious she was about getting married. After successfully surviving the fight, she earned the right to propose to Masuya, who was seated ringside as a spectator. The surprised Masuya, who knew nothing of the plan, accepted her proposal.

Masuya is the owner and chef of the Italian restaurant Osteria Lucca in Tokyo’s Shibuya district. He met Abukawa two years ago when he appeared on the show “Hanamaru Market,” which Hokuyo were regulars on.

Abukawa and Masuya have not yet set a date for their marriage registration or their wedding ceremony.
