Norika Fujiwara stars as obstetrician in “Gyne”

Actress Norika Fujiwara (38) will star in NTV’s “Gyne: Sanfujinka no Onnatachi,” her first season-long drama series since 2007. The story is a human drama set in the medical world.

“Gyne” takes place in the Obstetrics and Gynecology department at a university hospital. Fujiwara plays a reticent obstetrician who rarely smiles. Ever since a traumatic incident, she has had little interest in anything other than saving patients.

The series also deals with problems in the current state of the medical field. It is based on a book by Dr. Takashi Okai titled “No Fault,” which focuses on a policy protecting doctors from the high risk of litigation. In addition to the issue of lawsuits, the story looks at the shortage of doctors and the long working hours.

To prepare for her role, Fujiwara recently spent some time at a hospital interviewing doctors and observing a Caesarean section delivery.

“Gyne” will air on NTV at 10:00pm on Wednesday nights, starting in October. The supporting cast includes Yuka Itaya, Yuki Matsushita, Hashinosuke Nakamura, and Norito Yashima.
