Film distributor Shochiku announced on Monday that Yojiro Takita’s “Okuribito” (“Departures”) has surpassed the 6 billion yen mark in its 31st week at the box office. Shochiku said that as of April 12, the movie has been seen in theaters by approximately 5.25 million people.
In February, “Okuribito” won the prize for Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards. At that time, the film had made 3.2 billion yen at the box office, but since then it has made an additional 2.8 billion.
