“Ryomaden” starts at 23.2%

NHK’s new taiga drama “Ryomaden,” starring Masaharu Fukuyama (40), premiered on Sunday night. Viewership data shows that the first episode averaged a 23.2% rating, indicating a fairly good start for the show.

While “Ryomaden” fell short of last year’s “Tenchijin” (which achieved 24.7% with its first episode), the show still scored the second best opener of the past five years. NHK is surely hoping that the new series performs as well as “Atsuhime” did in 2008 – that show’s first episode only got 20.3%, but it picked up steam and ended up rating 24.5% over the entire year, the highest average since 1997′s “Hideyoshi.”
