Tatsuya Fujiwara stars in “Chameleon”

Tatsuya Fujiwara is starring in a hardboiled action film titled “Chameleon.” The story involves a group of young swindlers who witness a kidnapping. As a mysterious organization begins killing them off, one of them decides to take revenge into his own hands.

The original script was written about 30 years ago, with the lead role meant to be played by the late actor Yusaku Matsuda. It was written by Shoichi Maruyama, who wrote several of Matsuda’s films, and was to be produced by Mitsuru Kurosawa, who also often worked with Matsuda.

The movie was never made, but Kurosawa decided to revive it with director Junji Sakamoto at the helm and Fujiwara as the star. In addition, the screenplay was adapted to a more modern setting.

Filming started last month and just wrapped up. No CG was used for the action scenes.

The supporting cast includes Shun Shioya, Kei Tani, Masato Hagiwara, Kosuke Toyohara, Hiroshi Inuzuka, Haruko Kato, and Ittoku Kishibe. Release is scheduled for next summer. Distributor Toei is reportedly looking to turn the film into a series.
