The sumo world’s most recent scandal has led the Japan Sumo Association to dismiss stablemaster Tokitsukaze, while the association chairman Kitanoumi punished himself with a 50 percent pay cut for four months. Other committee members have taken 30 percent salary reductions for three months.
On June 26, 17-year-old junior wrestler Takashi Saito (who wrestled under the name of Tokitaizan) died during a training session, apparently the result of hazing. According to investigations, several senior wrestlers from the stable had severely beaten him while Tokitsukaze refused to intervene. Tokitsukaze even admitted hitting Saito on the head with a beer bottle the day before his death.
