“Villon’s Wife” enters competition at Montreal

Director Kichitaro Negishi’s “Viyon no Tsuma” (“Villon’s Wife”) will be in competition later this month at the 33rd Montreal World Film Festival.

Starring Takako Matsu (32) and Tadanobu Asano (33), the movie is based on the story of the same name by Osamu Dazai, whose 100th birth anniversary is being celebrated this year. It is scheduled to open in theaters in Japan on October 10.

Among other films from around the world, “Viyon no Tsuma” will be competing against Miwa Nishikawa’s “Dear Doctor,” which stars Tsurube Shofukutei. That movie was announced as part of the competition back in May.

Last year, the festival’s grand prize was won by Yojiro Takita’s highly-acclaimed “Okuribito.”

The Montreal World Film Festival kicks off on August 27 and runs until September 7.
