Wataru Sakata denies divorce rumors

Pro wrestler Wataru Sakata (36) has denied the rumors that he is divorcing talento Eiko Koike (29). Last week, newspapers had reported that the couple was about to break up due to Sakata’s financial troubles. But on Friday, a reporter on NTV’s “Jouhou Live Miyaneya” who had spoken with Sakata said that the reports are untrue.

Sakata and Koike married in August 2007 after five years of dating. According to the rumors, Sakata has accumulated a debt of about 60 million yen. This reportedly led him to consider divorce in order to spare Koike of the financial hardship, even though sources close to the couple say that there are no problems in their relationship as husband and wife.

In addition, it was said that the izakaya Sakata opened in Shibuya three years ago has been doing poorly lately and may close down soon. One of the restaurant’s staff members stated that Sakata was there almost every day, but Koike has recently stopped visiting.

Sakata responded to the reports, telling the NTV reporter that the restaurant is doing fine and that Koike has been absent due to other work. He also asserted that they are not getting a divorce. However, he did not touch on the matter of the debt.
