Yosuke Kubozuka to get drenched in Yukio Ninagawa’s “Chi no Konrei”

Last year, actor Yosuke Kubozuka (30) worked with stage director Yukio Ninagawa (75) for the first time in a stage play. The two are now working together again this spring for an ambitious production called “Chi no Konrei,” which will reportedly feature rain falling on stage for almost the entire show.

“Chi no Konrei” was first performed in 1986, and Ninagawa did two more productions in 1993 and 1999. This will be the play’s first performance in 12 years. (The play should not be confused with the Spanish play “Bodas de Sangre,” which is also performed in Japan under the title “Chi no Konrei.”)

Kubozuka plays a man who steals his close friend’s bride during the wedding ceremony, eloping with her to another town. Two years later, he and the woman have separated, but the friend he betrayed shows up in town, leading to a messy reunion for the three of them.

The play is 100 minutes long, but rain will be falling for 90 minutes of it, with varying degrees of intensity ranging from mist to heavy downpour. The stage’s setup will allow the water to be reused, though it is said that each performance will use a total of 10 tons of water.

42 performances are planned over the play’s 1-month run, starting in June.
