Yura Yura Teikoku disbands

On March 31, rock band Yura Yura Teikoku announced on their official website that they are breaking up.

Consisting of vocalist/guitarist Shintaro Sakamoto, bassist Chiyo Kamekawa, and drummer Ichiro Shibata, the band originally formed in 1989 (sans Shibata) and released their first indies album in 1992. In 1998, they signed with record label MIDI, where they stayed for seven years before moving to Sony Music Entertainment in 2005. That same year, they started doing concerts overseas, bringing them international popularity and leading to multiple U.S. releases.

In the announcement of their breakup, Sakamoto explained that since the start of this year, the group’s members had been discussing their future. They felt that they had accomplished everything they could with the band, and continuing would feel like “routine work.” As a result, they chose to disband, with the three of them planning to pursue different musical projects.
